Uluwatu is a beautiful and popular destination in Bali, located on the southern tip of the island. It’s known for its stunning cliff top views, white sand beaches, and epic surf breaks, making it a haven for surfers and beach-goers alike.

The area offers a mix of surf culture, luxurious clifftop living, and local village life, making it appealing to a variety of travelers. Uluwatu is home to the iconic Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple, one of the most important and beautiful Hindu temples in Bali, and is also home to some of the most luxurious resorts and beach clubs on the island. The area has a laid-back atmosphere, with a focus on relaxation and enjoyment of the beautiful surroundings.

There are many activities to choose from, including surfing, beach days, visiting temples and cultural sites, and enjoying the many stunning sunset views.

Quick Tips

Language

The native language is Indonesian, which has a unique dialect in Bali. But most people speak some level of English.

When To Visit

During the dry season (April – October). But be prepared for more expensive flights and accomodations during the high season. If you don’t mind a few rainstorms, you can also consider visiting during the wet season (November – March).

Currency

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR proof of negative COVID-19 test if unvaccinated; Purchase a ‘visa on arrival’ at the Indonesian airport; Passport that is valid for 6 months from date of arrival; Additional health questionnaires may be required upon arrival

Getting To Uluwatu

Because Bali is an island, you will need to arrive via flight to the Denpasar-Ngurah Rai International Airport. The most direct routes to fly to Bali include: From the US via Singapore or Hong Kong; From Europe via SIngapore or Kuala Lumpur; From Japan via Tokyo; or direct from Australia. Once at the airport, Uluwatu is about a 50 minute drive. We recommend using the ride share app Grab to book a ride upon arrival.

What To Expect

Getting Around

Rideshare apps, like Grab and GO-JEK, are popular amongst tourists and a very convenient way to get around. But if you want to experience Bali the authentic Balinese way, we highly recommend renting a scooter! Scooters are cheap, convenient and will save you a lot of time in traffic all across the island.

Weather

Bali is pleasant year round! Throughout the year, the daytime temperatures hover between the mid-80s and low 90s, with only the humidity and precipitation patterns changing. Bali only has two seasons, rainy season (November through March) and dry season (April through October).

While the rainy season is known for lower rates, you also need to keep in mind the combination of rain, humidity and high temperatures (ew), as well as the decreased visibility for diving and unrelenting mosquitos.

Bali’s dry season provides warm temperatures without too much rainfall and humidity – ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, sailing and sunbathing. However, this pleasant weather doesn’t come cheap.

Throughout the year, the daytime temperatures hover between the mid-80s and low 90s, with only the humidity and precipitation patterns changing.

Safety

Indonesian people are some of the friendliest people we have ever met, and Bali is extremely safe for travelers overall! That said, it’s always a good idea to keep your wits about you and make sure your valuables are secure and out of reach at all times. You also need to watch out for road safety, especially if you are renting a scooter.

What to Pack

Due to its tropical atmosphere, Bali fashion is generally informal. When planning what to pack, choose clothing in lightweight fabrics to keep you cool in the humidity, such as flowy sun dresses with sneakers or sandals and beachwear. Swimsuits are almost always acceptable to wear in this beach town. Oh, and DONT FORGET bug spray and sunscreen!!!

What about money

Currency:

The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). This can definitely get a bit tricky, so we recommend memorizing a few simple conversions. For example: 15,000 IDR is about $1 USD ($0.96), 150,000 IDR is about $10 USD ($9.58), and 500,000 IDR is about $30 USD ($31.95).

Costs:

Bali is a super budget-friendly destination, so it’s pretty easy to visit the island and not have to worry about breaking the bank. However, South Bali is the most visited region on the island, so you should expect slightly higher prices than in central or north Bali.

Cash or Credit Cards?

There are plenty of ATMs throughout Uluwatu and we always recommend keeping cash on you while in Bali. Most upscale restaurants also accept credit cards.

Tipping Culture:

While many places include a 5-10% service fee, tipping is not expected on top of this. However, if you receive excellent service and wish to leave a tip, it will always be appreciated.

Uluwatu Neighborhoods

Balangan Beach

This up-and-coming area is slightly off the beaten track (about 20 minutes from the popular areas) and less developed than the rest of the Bukit Peninsula.

This is a great area to stay in if you are after a relaxing vacation and/or hoping to avoid the backpacking and partying crowd.

Highlights include Balangan Beach Viewpoint, sunsets from warungs on the beach, and open land with cows and natural beauty.

Bingin Beach / Dreamland

Driving south from Balangan, your next stop will be Dreamland Beach, and next to it, Bingin Beach.

These are two of the best beaches in Uluwatu and it’s a great central location for your adventures in the Bukit Peninsula.

You can expect relaxed vibes close to the beach and slightly more expensive prices than other areas in Uluwatu.

Some of the highest-rated massage places in Uluwatu are below but it seems that you can find good massage experiences at many locations in the Bukit Peninsula. Many of the high-end resorts in Uluwatu also have their own spa and massage centers, which may be more expensive but are also highly regarded.

From chic pool clubs with fancy cocktails to more laid-back backpacker bars, there’s something for everyone. A few of our favorite spots include the Uluwatu Temple, Single Fin Beach Club, Karang Boma Cliff, Nyang Nyang beach, Binging beach, El Kabron Cliff Club and Sunset Point.

Single Fin Beach Club

A popular and highly regarded spot for tourists and locals alike, with its stunning views, great food and drinks, live music, and fun atmosphere. We recommend getting here at least an hour before sunset to snag a seat with a great view. The best nights to enjoy Single Fin are Wednesdays and Sundays, when the crowds are dancing and the music is bumpin! This experience is a MUST!

Uluwatu Temple

Located on a rugged cliff top above the Indian Ocean, the Uluwatu Temple (also known as Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is one of the holiest temples in Bali and is considered a protective landmark that guards the island from evil sea spirits. The temple is known for its breathtaking views and beautiful Balinese culture, and is particularly popular during the daily Kecak Fire Dance, which is performed at sunset. Visitors to the temple should dress respectfully (although sarongs are provided) and be aware of the mischievous monkeys that may try to steal items such as sunglasses and cameras. The temple is about a 10-minute drive from Bukit and about 25 minutes from Pecatu, and is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Uluwatu.
